What does martial arts do for young people?

Martial Arts can be a great activity to get your children into for a whole range of reasons, they learn a self-defense which in turn will teach them life-long skills like;

  • self-discipline, self-respect and patience

  • it improves concentration in all areas of their life especially at school

  • it helps children build awareness, self-confidence, and a sense of mindfulness

  • it’s great for teaching children about conflict resolution and really builds a sense of community, team work and social responsibility

  • and…they learn all of this all while getting exercise, building strength and flexibility and having fun

HOw do parents choose a Martial Art that fits a young person?

  • martial arts can be a positive, healthy activity for children—especially if they're involved in a discipline that matches their interests and personality

  • each martial art requires slightly different skills and techniques in order to be successful

  • depending on the child, they will likely prefer some overothers

What should parents be looking for when choosing a teacher?

  • asking studios about their approach rather than focusing what the differences are between one martial versus another

  • choosing a place where kids are happy, where they can learn about themselves and they feel like they can confront any situation and not be fearful, in any area of their lives

  • is atmosphere inviting and clean and are the instructors approachable

  • can youcommunicate with the teachers

  • you may want to ask about what their qualifications and certifications are

  • we suggest to parents that before committing to any martial art studio it is important to have their child try a couple of classes to make sure it’s a good fit and that they are having fun

What advise do you give to young people starting out in martials?

Be patient with yourself as you learn a new skill. Like anything it takes time to become really good at it, but the main thing is make sure that it is something that you enjoy doing and are having fun!
